How to audit product data from ad to checkout

Published 29/10/2026 · DV Shipping

A customer clicks an ad for a blue product, opens a page with the black version selected and finds a different price at checkout. Follow one exact variant through the buying journey to find where the offer changes.

Choose a variant and a market

Pick a product your team is actively promoting. Record its identifier, variant, advertised URL, target market and the time of the check. Keep those details fixed while you compare the journey. Changing the colour or destination halfway through can turn a valid difference into an apparent error.

Use the customer-facing link, rather than a shortcut from your store administration. Note what opens by default and what the buyer must select.

Compare the offer at each step

Google Merchant Center requires key product information on the landing page to agree with the submitted product data. Its guidance covers the product or variant, price, currency and availability. Consult the official requirements for the market and channel you use.

Create a comparison with one row for each field and columns for product data, landing page and checkout. Include shipping charges and offer conditions as separate observations. Record what the customer sees, not what the team intended to publish.

Treat a stock change as a new check

Availability deserves its own pass. Google’s availability documentation calls for consistency between the data source, landing page and checkout. A product that becomes unavailable is a useful test case for your update process.

Check which source changed, which customer-facing step still shows the earlier information and who owns the correction. This helps distinguish a content mistake from an update that has not reached another part of the journey.

Close the issue with another customer journey

For each mismatch, save the URL, field, observed value and evidence. Assign one owner and agree on the next check. After the change, repeat the original path using the same variant and market. A corrected spreadsheet alone does not demonstrate that the customer-facing offer has changed.

Keep the audit narrow enough to repeat. One verified product journey gives the team a concrete starting point for expanding the review.

Connect the review to the operation

The offer depends on information that comes from the operation, including the item and its availability. Keep those confirmations accessible to the people maintaining the customer-facing content.
